Trammel Bar
Making Curves a Joy
Welcome to the Trammel Bar
Cutting curves in leatherwork has usually been assisted by following a form or template.
Problems arises when the curves required exceed the forms we have available to us.
The Trammel is a tool that has been available for many years, but limited to marking only.
The Trammel Bar, or as it affectionally labelled, the Armitage Leather Curve Cutting Thing was designed by Nigel to be used twice without any change to the tool being required, It can used for marking, and then whilst set in the same position, used for cutting.
This greatly reduces errors when changing from marking to cutting.
There are no posts, this brings the tool down to a flat position, removing any unstable wobble or variation to the tool when used.
The tool can be used to produce a curve in radius form from 100mm to 1600mm.
In diameter form, that is 200mm to 3200mm.
It can be used in one, two or three parts.
Bar one will give you a curve cutting range of 100mm to 600mm
Bar two extends this range from 610mm to 1100
Bar three extends this further, from 1110mm to 1600mm
Whilst it is unlikely that anyone would need a full circle cutting to 3.2m, it is all about the arc.
The curve you require may only cover an area of 250mm, the flap of a bag for example, it is this bar that now gives you the option to apply the perfect curve to suit the design.
Measurements are set in 10mm increments with an optional +5 hole to give options of a 5mm variation.
This tool, in three parts allows you to cut over 300 curve options at 5mm increments.

If you are not wholly confident on what the trammel bar does, or if you need it, here is a video of it in use.
The video clearly demonstrates the range and versitility of this quite unique tool but it does not come even close to hightighting all of its applications or true potential.
